They say it has been 40 years. So I looked into it.
It was forty years ago that we had Super Bowl V. The Baltimore COLTS beat Dallas.
No way! Really? The microprocessor was invented.
Nasdaq.....yes, THAT NASDAQ was born.
Archie Bunker came to television with the Dingbat and Meathead.
We all cried our eyes out watching "Love Story" at the theater for $1.50.
Say it ain't so. Joe Frazier beat the great Muhammad ALi.
The Supreme Court rules unanimously that busing of students may be ordered to achieve racial desegregation. Some of my classmates at Lake Taylor High School in Norfolk, Virginia would go on to graduate from Booker T. High School instead of LTHS.
Half a million people descended on Washington DC to protest the Viet Nam War. Charlie got home from Viet Nam in December of 1970.
Massachusettes passed legislation creating "Special Education."
President Nixon (when he was still president) declared the War on Drugs.
The South Tower of the World Trade Center was completed.
Construction began on the Louisiana Superdome!
Walt Disney World opened in Florida. (The lines were so long the next summer when I was there that I didn't get on even one ride! Craziness!!)
The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Baltimore Orioles in the World Series.
DB Cooper parachuted from his hijacked plane with $200,00.00.
There was a fire at the casino where Frank Zappa was performing so Deep Purple gave us "Smoke on the Water" to its memory.
On my ipod........in my record collection was Jefferson Airplane, the Jackson 5, Bee gees, Carpenters, 3 Dog Night, Carol King's "Tapestry" (Still the best), Elton John, Feetwood Mac, Doobie Brothers, Temptations, Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, Diana Ross, Diana Ross, Joni Mitchell, Moody Blues, and others. Simon and Garfunkel took top honors at the Grammy's for "Bridge Over Troubled Waters."
It cost me $4.00 to fill up my Dad's VW beetle. Malibu Barbie was selling for $1.94. An Etch A Sketch was $2.00. The new toy, Legos, was a hit. Their Lego House Kit had 536 pieces and cost a whopping $9.99!
My family had recently moved to Provo. My Dad bought a 6 bedroom house on the hill overlooking the valley and paid $49,000.00 for it!!!! Wow. We must be rich or something. (Or else had 9 kids to house.)
Oh yeah. 1971. 40 years ago. I graduated from Provo High School. My class had a reunion in the Provo City Library (formerly the old BY High) last Saturday. I missed it. I found another classmate back east that couldn't make it either. We met on Friday at the Washington DC temple, did a session, then went to "Guapos" for dinner. We talked and looked through the yearbook. And YES.....we look exactly the same as we did then.
Thanks Julie! It was fun.
