So....a few weeks ago I was sustained as the Stake Music Chairman. Okay by me because it was at stake conference and that meant I wouldn't be doing much until the next stake conference. I received an e-mail from our Stake President John which said we would be having an emergency stake conference next week.... What!?!...and would I handle the music. "Sure," I said. "I would love to." And so it began. I spent the better part of a day calling people in the stake who were on the list of musicians and organists. Out of town, sprained wrist, going on vacation, foot in a cast (I see nothing wrong with playing the organ in a cast. I have done it.), and so on. In desparation, I called the host ward building music chariman, Sister John (wife of the pres) and she told me of a man who was just released from the bishopric who would love to play the organ again. I called him. (Really?) He was so looking forward to sitting with his wife and 4 small children finally. "Do I have to? Oh, all right. I guess we can hire a babysitter." Okay. I'm really not complaining, but I remembered why I hate stake callings. I get so tired of begging people to serve, which is why I told President John I would love to even though I really didn't.
Musical number? Oh No!! My first thought, as Elder Rasband of the Seventy would be coming (hence the emergency conference) was missionary work. Have the missionaries sing the army of Helaman song. President John was hesitant to use the missionaries but he did say that a group of youth sang that very song for Seminary graduation last week. Perfect. Call Sister Cox and have her do it again and she can lead the music as well. Sister Cox; will be on vacation but she will send the music with the accompianist, Sister Harmon. Fine. I can lead the choir and the congregation. Lots of e-mails were sent to seminary teachers, bishops, presidencies of the youth, etc. All that is left to do is pray for a miracle.
Sunday came this morning and I prayed all the way over to the stake center that the 9:00 emergency rehearsal would be a success. There were 8 youth there at 9:00. Sister Harmon's daughter was in the hospital, so she sent the music with the emergency accompianist, Sister Baker. (Pray for Sister Baker!) Pray, pray, pray. I had 40 copies of "As Sisters in Zion and We'll Bring the World His Truth" medley.
By 9:30, there were 28 youth there. It will be fine. Not great, but what do you expect on short notice?
9:40 came and all were to be in their seats. Presiden John requested that all the missionaries come fill in the choir seats and sit where the stake could see them. Okay......I have extra music and all these missionaries! (30 or so elders and sisters!) I quickly passed out the music and asked those who would like, to sing with us.
Conference...............Hymn, prayer, and we're up!
Can you say FANTABULOUS? Never underestimate the power of prayer and the spirit. We were all a bit surprised at the sound and very grateful. Lesson learned.
And......whenever asked by anyone in the church to serve; be it the Bishop, Sunday school instructor, or stake music chairman; tell them you would love to even if you wouldn't. Miracles happen and blessings follow.
