Did you know there is a Mormon Fort in Las Vegas? After all, the Mormons were the first people to live there. So who is the lady statue? Seems the Mormons built the fort and tried to farm and stuff, but the conditions were so bad and the Indians kept stealing stuff so they abandoned it after 2 years. Some guy bought it, was foreclosed on, so a guy named Stewart bought it and took his wife there. The lady statue is Helen J. Stewart. What a hero!! She had 4 kids and was pregnant with the 5th when her husband got in an argument with another land owner and was killed. She went and picked up his body, brought it home, buried him, and ran the ranch he had built by herself with the help of her dad, a foreman, and workers. She made friends with and was kind to the Indians so they helped her. She heard of speculation that a railroad was going to be built between Salt Lake City and Los Angeles. She started buying up land like crazy. She sold the land to the Railroad and she built herself a big home in Las Vegas. She built a school, helped in the community and grew old. What a lady!!
I had never seen the Las Vegas Temple so we drove over there. Had never been to the big mall in Henderson either. Better go there. And this is how we Vegas.
While I am here, let me just say a little about recycling. I thought I had been pretty good about collecting papers and stuff and then driving to the recycle bin thing in the parking lots around here. So proud. Then....St. George gave us all recycling cans for pickup every other week. They made it soooooooo easy. Sad. I needed easy. We now recycle twice as much as we throw away! I am not kidding!!! The blue bin is always full. It's almost not worth carting the garbage can out to the street anymore because it has hardly anything in it!
