Making a left turn at your destination!
Please, Brother Brigham, teach the East coast!!
SO, you are cruising down the highway and there it is; your destination. The concrete barrier on your left does not allow you to enter. In fact, the only place you can legally turn left is (as the lady in my gps says) "Proceed on the present route for 2 miles then make a legal u-turn." You pass 3 stop lights with "no u-turn" signs posted on them. You try to outsmart the gps and turn left at one of them anyway because you are going to make a u-turn after you turn left. You find yourself on a very narrow 2 lane, winding road with trees on both sides right up to the road. Traffis is clogging both sides so you just go with the traffic another 4 miles and finally turn into an opening which turns out to be someone's driveway. You can't back out because of the traffic. You sheepishly go up the driveway, then do a front, back, front, back, front, back manuever to get your car turned around and then go out to the road again after waiting for the traffic to somewhat slow until a good samaritan lets you in. Four miles back to the stoplight you turn right, go through 2 stoplights and arrive at your destination. I think I will listen to the little gps lady next time.
Friday, February 1, 2008 It's been a while.
We are still here. Life has gotten very busy. I grew up out here but forgot how much the church consumes your life here. Chuck and I just finished our first temple prep lesson with a sister in the branch. We meet at the church because we both live 20 minutes away from the church but in opposite directions. The branch music chairman (me) is in charge of an outreach Easter program in the Rising Sun community. When the committee got together to start planning, we realized that Easter is pretty early this year. We will shoot for a summer outreach concert that will involve more of the community choirs. (And besides...the branch president said the cellist died this year and it will be hard to replace him.) I mean...this is a full blown Easter cantata. What have I gotten myself into? My suggestion....let the other churches provide the music and we will host it at our meetinghouse and provide refreshments. We are good at refreshments.
Speaking of food....the 4th Sunday of the month is a pot-luck-presedencies-get-your-meeting-in-day after church. I wonder how much really gets done at those meetings. Our Branch conference is the 2nd week in February. The choir just sang last week and is scheduled every 4th Sunday so I suggested the famous "Instant Choir." (Thanks, Mike Babcock.) The President thought it was a great idea. (Yea. Great and EASY.) I am having a less active man sing a solo with the choir. Two birds with one stone. I tell ya, missionary work out here is so easy. They just fall in your lap. Chuck manages to teach a class every week. He never knows which one until he gets to church. (He prefers it that way. No prep and no worry.)
I have become a fan of Oxford High School's girl's basketball team. A young woman from the branch plays on the team. (I just can't seem to let go of the youth. Once a YW president....always a YW president.) Besides, Chuck is the family's home teacher. (2 birds thing again.) All this and I have been able to get down to DC to go to lunch with a friend who lives in Williamsburg, VA. I drove down and she drove up. We grew up in Norfolk, VA. Talk about a fun day! We hadn't seen each other in 33 years.
Chuck and Andy are taking me to a Broadway play for my birthday this month. We have a Farnsworth nephew and a Davis niece that live in Manhattan so will join them for dinner after the play. They happen to be in the same ward. Small world. Have a great day. Nancy
P.S. When it snows here the rain that follows melts the snow. I wish someone had told me that before I spent 2 hours shoveling our driveway. BTW It's raining again.
And because I am posting these e-mails from long ago I have pictures of the trip we took to NYC for you to enjoy. (Mostly for Rachel because I know she reads my blog and she likes pictures.)
