Still rolling....

Thursday, July 10, 2008   More ramblings from Pennsylvania
So it has been like, forever since last I rambled.  Well, we've been busy.  Every time the wind blows our half acre woods in back gives us dead limbs to pick up and burn.  Chuck is trying to clear out an area for a hammock.  We spend every weekend planting magnolia trees, dogwood trees, wisteria, azaleas, honeysuckle, hosta, begonias, rhododendrums, jasmine, Japanese maples....well, you get the picture.  The spring here is amazing!  There are more flowering trees out here than there are ticks!!  I only mention this because the dogs continue to bring them in.  They both have their lyme disease shots so when the ticks fall off they are dead.  (The ticks.  Not the dogs.)  After the second dead tick in our bed the dogs now sleep downstairs.  When Chuck starts feeling sorry for them....I let him sleep downstairs too.
Now that the spring color has subsided, we are in deep summer green.  Everywhere you look
it is greener than green.  All you can see are trees.  Now and again we will break through the trees and see.....corn.  (Also green.)  Where are the beautiful mountains?!  Oh yeah, we don't have any.
Speaking of humidity...okay I wasn't, but it's pretty hard to miss out here.  I never knew how GOOD air-conditioning feels until I stepped into the house after working in the yard.  It feels SO good that sometimes I will stand outside in the hot, humid weather and drip sweat just so I can come inside and feel the heaven of the air-conditioner.  We will take the humidity so we can enjoy not having to have a sprinkling system to worry about or having to drag around a hose.  Water is definitely not a problem out here.  I even hose off my walks without any guilt!

Nighttime is my favorite.  The sun goes down and the lightning bugs come out.  There must be a kabillion out in our backyard and woods.  We get a light show every night.  (The dogs had fun with them the first week, but now they are bored with them.)
Well, ramblings done.  Enjoy Utah!  We miss it!!  Nancy

Thursday, October 30, 2008     Hello Utah!
It has been a year since we left Utah.  So much has happened.  Let's start with what hasn't happened.  Neither Chuck nor I have had one, NOT EVEN ONE, chip in our windshields.  The roads are smooth, clear of rocks, and easily traveled.  There are no orange construction cones for road construction.  There is very little roadwork at all.  Nice.  There ARE cones for the tree people.  We don't dodge potholes here.  We dodge tree people.  They come out after every rain and wind storm.  They set up their orange cones and tree chipper, shredder trucks and clear off the roads.  The trees here are old and just kick the bucket for whatever reason and blow down or lose branches with every storm.  If we aren't dodging the Amish and their buggies, we are dodging tree limbs.
Speaking of rain...(smooth transition) there are some days when it feels like rain but doesn't.  Othe days it feels like rain and it does.  You can never tell.  The only way you can tell if it is raining (not just misting in the humidity) is to stand still and see if you get wet or not.  If you watched the first half of the 5th games of the World series...that was definitely rain.  It rained like that all day.  The rest of the game on Wednesday night was played in just misting conditions.  How about those Phillies?  It's all been pretty exciting out here.  Some of our neighbors obviously went to the game because they blew their horn all through the neighborhood when they got home.  Other neighbors, who ALWAYS look for a reason, any reason, to shoot off fireworks (which are legal here) had a heyday.  Now if the Eagles can do as well.
Speaking of the Eagles...we are celebrating Thanksgiving this year with them.  Chuck was able to get tickets for that game in the CHS box.  Not only will we get to watch an NFL game in person on Thanksgiving day, but we will also be treated like royalty with lots to eat in our private space.  We just have to behave ourselves in front of the corporate people.  Watch for us!
It's pretty exciting to be in Pennsylvania during a presidential election...so we thought.  Our votes actually count out here so every Republican or Democrat has personally called us to ask for our vote; every polster has called to ask how we are voting; and we could build a bonfire with all the written material that has been dumped in our mailbox or on our front porch.  That's what we get for being a 2 party household.  I will have to vote this year for sure because it will be one year that Chuck and I won't cancel each other out.  Chuck won't be voting this year.  Why?  He is still recuperating from his cancer surgery which went well.  The final results are in and there will be NO follow up chemo.
Speaking of gas...(I wasn't but now I am) I go to Maryland to buy gas.  It is $2.69 in PA.  I found a gas station just a mile past the church in Maryland for $2.15.  I am the Young Women's president now so I can fill up every Wednesday night. It's hard to believe for a branch our size, but I have 9 Laurels. (Only 3 Mia Maids and 2 Beehives)  The really sad part is that the branch only has 1 priest. (But he's a cute priest!)  The girls attend 4 different high schools so he goes to a lot of dances.
Life continues to be good for us here in PA.  We are looking forward to a visit from 3 of our children next week.  They kind of freaked out when they found out their Dad had cancer.  I think they just want to make sure he is okay...and he is.  Give our love to Utah!  Nancy

(I have totally caught up now to my blog.)
